Rodent Control

The most obvious sign of a rodent infestation is the appearance of a live or dead mouse or rat. You might also notice rodent droppings in corners and crevices; dirt and grease marks on walls and floorboards; teeth marks or other damage on walls, shelves, or furniture; and scratching noises at night. As soon as you notice any of these signs, you should call an exterminator. If you don’t control the infestation with professional extermination, it can be difficult to recover the damage to your home.

Left untreated, a rodent infestation places your family at risk for salmonella bacteria (food poisoning), leptospirosis, and typhus, along with parasites such as fleas, roundworms, and mites. Rodents also chew through wood, which can cause permanent damage to the house, and through electrical insulation, which creates an urgent fire hazard.

The best way to prevent a mouse or rat infestation is to seal all crevices from the outside. Keep in mind that mice can fit through a hole the size of a dime. Mice tend to build nests in warm, closed-off places, such as between walls, under floorboards, and around counters. The most common rat in the area, the Norway rat, tends to burrow at ground level or make its home in sewer systems and drain pipes with easy access to water.

Most importantly, when dealing with an infestation, professional help is essential. Mice mature rapidly, and a grown female can deliver eight litters of five to six babies per year, so the problem will grow exponentially if not solved correctly the first time.
